Eight times ring the quarterdecks bell
Loud and crisp let it be clearly heard
Over the roar of the wild spindrift wave
Through the decks to those below interned
Sound it clear that his time was one
Of long and faithful service conferred
Whatchstander, ring your bell smartly
Heard by crews in port or detachment far
Ring the bell to honor his memory
Ring it to mourn the crossing of life’s bar
Toll the bell in fair winds or in storm
On course true under Southern Cross star
His revered place will forever remain
Standing in our unbroken bluejacket line
So solemnly ring the bell and grieve
Over the lonely expanse of abyssal brine
Toll it well for your honored shipmate
As his watch, finally relieved, now is thine
Steadfastly perform your duty well, Sailor
As he now watches you from Heavens gate
His duty to bear is now your sacred burden
No matter, friend, what your rank or rate
Until he welcomes you to the eternal patrol
Piping you aboard ringing those bells of eight
